Regeneration is that act of God by which the principle of the new life is implanted in man, and the governing disposition of the soul is made holySystematic Theology, 469
As fire has various operations on things of a different nature, either to congregate or separate through burning; in the same manner, holy zeal in those hearts in which God has kindled it, into much heat for good, and against evil. And as fire which burns on the hearth, warms, the whole room; in the same manner the flame of holy zeal in the soul, is influential in its operations, through the Christians whole conversion. The Zealous Christian
would it not be a commendable Christian compassion to save such with godly fear, pulling them out of the fire, and rather scorch them with the flame of zeal, then give them liberty to go securely to hell (Jude 23)
In a multitude of cases, and in all cases where regeneration is spoken of, it means the whole soul; that is, it includes the intellect, will, and the conscience as well as the affections. Hence the Bible speaks of the eyes, of the thoughts, of the purposes, of the devices, as well as of the feelings or affections of the heart. In Scriptural language, therefore, a 'new heart' does not mean simply a new state of feeling, but a radical change in the state of the whole soul or interior man.
He can make the dry parched ground of my soul to become a pool and my thirsty barren heart as springs of water. Yes he can make this habitation of dragons this heart which is so full of abominable lusts and fiery temptations to be a place of bounty and fruitfulness unto Himself
